Preparing for the trip

Well, this is my first ever blog. I have been *encouraged* by many supporters to share my experiences here in the hopes that it will inspire many others to render humanitarian services. This trip is a result of me helping out with some computer work and sponsoring a child in India two years ago.

This year, I have been invited to share my teaching expertise and monitor the education of all the sponsored children. My colleague has been going to India for the past 7 years, she began this when the huge earthquake hit Kutch and Gujarat. Each time, she has come back with even more sponsored children and/or families that are ultra-poor. Here are two examples of such cases:

1) Two children were taken to hostels when their mom took rat poison and killed herself because dad was spending everything into his alcoholic addiction and she had no food in her house left to feed her young children. All the containers in their kitchen were empty when she was found dead.

2) In another situation, an 8 year old girl begged to be taken to the hostel because her dad was deceased and when her mom re-married and had other children, her step-dad did not want her around. She stood in line by herself pleading for her case as her parents would not come out with her (her grandfather brought her to town).

Each family has a unique curve ball that life has thrown them and we are doing whatever little we can to enable them to get back on their feet again.
